Question:  what is going on with my marriage?

We have seen that you are sensing now your own fear not only of commitment, one that you were somewhat loathe to make to begin with, having in some ways felt that it was simply the best course of action to take at the time, but also the fear that by this man’s return you will lose the freedom and the sense of leaving one foot out the door, so to speak, that you have been enjoying. Know that it truly is “okay” to feel “hemmed in” by the bonds that you feel now wrapping themselves around you via the simple metal of a wedding ring and all that it symbolizes for you. Realize, however, that in many ways you are not only rebelling actively but also keeping quite close to you the unfortunate imprinting you received regarding relationships and marriage when you were a child. Do you not see that this is true? That what in many ways you have sought and fought to AVOID is now yours, to have and to hold? There is this terrible and somewhat ironic dichotomy that exists then within you, that on the one hand you crave the attachment to another yet you also find yourself repelled by this, repelled the even admitting that you “need” another human being. Isn’t it, then, better to avoid having just one? Do you not then have the ability to have everything you want at the same time (provided you have willing partners at both ends)? We suggest, then, that you begin at the beginning: it would be useful then to examine everything you can dredge up about relationships and commitment that you can possibly remember or summon forth from your imprinting. We warn you, this will indeed be a lengthy process. And, a heartening fact: this will come to you and be presented to you whether or not you “choose” it (because you already have chosen it, just on a deeper level).
